Performance Installation by Koen Delaere and Sun-Mi Hong

On Friday, June 12 at 4:30 p.m., ArtBase Terneuzen, as part of Zeeland Jazz: Transitivity, presents a sensational live encounter between painting and jazz featuring visual artist Koen Delaere and drummer/composer Sun-Mi Hong.

For this special occasion, Koen Delaere will create a spatial installation of paintings in the Terneuzen City Hall, to which Sun-Mi Hong will respond live. The painting is not a finished object, but an active instrument that resonates and responds. For the audience, seeing and listening merge, while performance, installation, and environment gradually flow into one another.

The performance installation by Koen Delaere and Sun-Mi Hong will also be open to visitors on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

On Saturday, June 13 at 4:30 p.m., curator Eva Langerak will be in conversation with visual artist Koen Delaere about his working methods, improvisation, and the importance of creative freedom. Delaere, who grew up in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, has collaborated with musicians and performers for many years. In 2008, he founded Whatspace, a nomadic art platform without a permanent location, dedicated to new forms of collaboration, production, and presentation.

About Koen Delaere

Koen Delaere is a Dutch artist who studied painting and philosophy at the Fontys University of Applied Sciences for the Arts in Tilburg. His work has been exhibited worldwide, from Tokyo and Auckland to Berlin, São Paulo, and New York. In 2006, he received the prestigious Wolvecamp Prize for painting. He is represented by galleries in Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, and Australia.

Delaere approaches painting as a form of performance. His work feels immediate and vibrant, as if it is coming into being in the very moment it is experienced. Much like in music, spontaneity, improvisation, and a certain degree of chance play an important role.

At the same time, there is always an underlying sense of control—a balance between freedom and direction. This tension is reflected in his paintings: an energetic layering, a sense of movement, and a freshness that evokes a live experience. His work seems to exist constantly in the present, not as something fixed, but as something that continues to evolve and take shape.
