Cargazoen, Armazoen en Retouren

On display at Terneuzen City Hall is the three-part textile work Cargazoen, Armazoen, en Retouren by Liesbeth Labeur. The tapestry depicts the cargo of a transatlantic slave voyage and invites conversation about the history of slavery in the Netherlands and Zeeland, as well as its lasting impact. Over, the artist: Liesbeth Labeur lives and works in Middelburg, Zeeland. She was born there but spent her childhood in Curaçao. In Breda, she studied independent art at the St. Joost Academy of Art and Design. She has a deep fascination with history in general. The history of slavery frequently recurs in her work.
