A Drawing for You, Maarten Bel. The Great Giving Party

Together with artist Maarten Bel, ArtBase Terneuzen is organizing “A Drawing for You”: a participatory art project centered on showing care for a stranger. People who do not (yet) know each other are paired up through a random draw. On the slip of paper, a participant shares something about themselves. The person who draws this slip uses this information as inspiration to create a drawing specifically for that person. Each participant therefore submits a slip of paper and draws one themselves, so that everyone creates a drawing for a stranger and ultimately receives a drawing from a stranger as well.

The project invites residents of the municipality of Terneuzen to create something for someone else in an accessible way. It doesn’t take much: paper, a pencil, attention, and sometimes a little courage. Language doesn’t have to be a barrier, and you don’t need to be a skilled artist. It’s not the quality of the drawing that matters, but the gesture: taking the time and giving your attention to someone you don’t know yet. Will you join us?
